If you are worried about spending $130 for the Gloomhaven base game, I highly recommend purchasing Jaws of the Lion first and seeing first if you like the system. Also includes one of the best set of tutorial scenarios that ramps you up into the full Gloomhaven system.

With a simple and straight-forward set-up and intuitive rules that get more complex and interesting over the course of several tutorial adventures, this "Gloomhaven-lite" is a perfect place for those interested in GH, but put off by the price, table footprint or set-up/tear down time.
I have played the original Gloomhaven and although it was fantastic, I hated the long setup. Jaws of the Lion massively shortens that setup time by making all of the scenarios be contained in a book, so all you have to do is open the book to the right scenario, place some monsters on, and play! The card play is great, and the cooperative aspect allows you to pull off different combos with each characters unique deck of cards to unleash massive damage together. The story is also a lot better in this one. In the original Gloomhaven, we just stopped reading the little entries before the scenarios after awhile because they were not interesting. Jaws of the Lion has an actual engaging story that makes you want to play more. Overall, Jaws of the Lion is an absolutely fantastic game that I highly recommend to anybody who wants to play a strategic dungeon crawler with your buddies.
